OP-ED: Nintendo Direct Unlikely to Reveal Redesigned 3DS Tomorrow

3DS Circle Pad Pro

A series of Nintendo Direct events are set to take place tomorrow, as creatively announced today through Swapnote messages sent out to 3DS owners. This is the third time Nintendo Direct is taking place and as Nintendo of America and Europe will each be hosting their own videos, as opposed to a broadcast only in Japanese, we should be getting much more information that is of interest to those outside of Japan.

The trend seems to be for Nintendo to showcase content through Nintendo Direct every two months. The first one took place in October, and although it did not bring with it any earth-shattering revelations, there were some newsworthy announcements. We received details on the 3DS system update adding 3D movie recordings and new StreetPass content, specifics on Mario Kart 7's online functionality, and new games were announced for Japan.

Metal Gear Solid 3: The Boss of Stealth Action Games

Exploring the innovations that made Snake's '60s adventure a best-in-class production.

By: Jeremy Parish February 17, 2012

Hideo Kojima has been trying to make a video game for 25 years now. With Metal Gear Solid 3, he very nearly succeeded.

This isn't to say Kojima hasn't overseen the creation of quite a few games in his time -- from whimsical penguin racers to vampiric spaghetti westerns with overtones of Norse legend, he's had his hand in several greats. But he's best known for the Metal Gear series, the ongoing saga of a guy named Dave who constantly, reluctantly finds himself as the world's last resort against utter nuclear armageddon, and all just because he happens to possess an acute genetic disposition to be adept at killing people. (He inherited it from his dad. Whom he killed. Twice. Once with hairspray.)

Rumor: next-gen Xbox controller might have a touchscreen too

Rumor: next-gen Xbox controller might have a touchscreen too

We know gamers are clamoring for some news on the next Xbox. Today's crazy rumor comes from a nugget in Xbox World Magazine that claims Microsoft is prototyping a controller with a touchscreen flanked by traditional 360 analogs, buttons and triggers. If that sounds like the Wii U's controller, you're not alone.

Can Twisted Metal Succeed Without DLC?

Six years after the industry drove horse armor jokes into the ground, the concept of a major title without downloadable content sounds absurd (unless you're talking about a Nintendo game). DLC gives publishers the chance to make a little more cash, and extends the life and sales of existing games -- thus limiting the damage used game sales can inflict on the bottom line. Combine those incentives with a population of gamers eagerly buying post-release content, and it's hard to find a reason for a publisher or developer not to push DLC, but that's exactly what Eat Sleep Play (ESP) and Sony are doing with the new Twisted Metal.

In an interview with Game Informer, Twisted Metal designer David Jaffe explained:

"Right now there are no plans. I always thought it was going to be a great game. But we weren't nursing these illusions that we were making Call of Duty in terms of sales. If it's a big enough hit I'm sure Sony won't let it wither on the vine. But right now there are no plans at all. There's no DLC plans, there's no sequel or expansion plans. We have to wait and see how it does."

5 Hilariously Bad Fan Concept Trailers

{}

I've come across bad fan-made trailers in my day, but these five are the cream of the crop. Despite their bad quality, shoddy acting, or odd concepts I still found them entertaining, and I guarantee you will too.

5. The Return of Aquaman

If you didn't catch the part where the king of Atlantis left we're in the same boat. Regardless, Aquaman is plotting his return to the deep by visiting pet stores and practicing in his backyard pool. I have to say the Requiem For A Dream music was a nice touch, and at the end I found myself hoping he does one day reunite with Ariel.

4. Mega Man: The Movie

If you are going to make a fan trailer and try to pass it off as a real movie, there are a few rules that you should follow.

  1. Make sure your VFX doesn't look like a Nintendo 64 game.
  2. Hire enough extras so that your big science showcase has more than two people in the crowd.
  3. Never say, "We're not so different...you and I."
  4. Hide the like bar and disable comments.

Perhaps some things the creators of this short will keep in mind for next time.

3. Terminator 6: He's Back

The Terminator is back...in Canada. My favorite part of this trailer is the opening scene with Steve Middleton looking like Jeff Spicoli's little brother ala Fast Times At Ridgemont High[1]. Kudos as well for the addition of actual music from the movie, I love me some DUH DUH DUH...DUH DUH!

2. Batman Vs. Gremlins

Fan-made? Yes. Awesome? Of course. Copyrighted? You betcha. The whole thing is great...but killing a Gremlin with the afterburner on the batmobile?! They should invent a word for that kind of awesome.

1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Young Jedi

It's unfair to say this film is terrible, but it's only because I feel bad saying that to a child in a Jedi suit. For what it's worth, this is probably the best production value and costume design you'll see out of all the fan-made films so far. And if I'm not mistaken, you'll recognize this guy and his son from Star Wars Uncut. If you are interested in seeing this entire film, it's available here[2]!

Nintendo's DLC Strategy Appears to Put the Company on the Right Track

Nintendo digital

Nintendo made headlines last week when it announced something many felt it should have had in place years ago: the Nintendo Network. The details remain sketchy at best and, like with details on the Wii U, it is likely we'll be waiting until E3 in June before we've given a better idea of how the Network will actually come together. What little president Satoru Iwata did have to share about it was encouraging, and the same could be said for a lot of what Nintendo at least claims to be doing as it works to put this current disastrous financial year behind it.

Following Friday's investors briefing, a Q&A session was conducted where Iwata and company provided many unspecific, but nonetheless promising answers about how the company plans to avoid suffering another money-losing year.

Sundance 2012 Review: INDIE GAME: THE MOVIE - Amazing Video Game Documentary

{}

Indie Game: The Movie is an amazing documentary that gives the audience an intimate look at the people driving the independent video game movement forward. It follows four individuals and their journey to achieving video game greatness by developing the games they want to make with no one telling them what they can and can't do. Let me introduce you to the individuals and games that the doc revolves around:

- Game designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes and their work on the Xbox Live game Super Meat Boywhich follows the adventures of a skinless boy in search of his girlfriend, who is made of bandages.

- Developer Phil Fish and his game Fez, which is highly anticipated and has been four years in the making.

- And then there's Jonathan Blow, the creator of the indie game Braid, which is considered one of the highest-rated games of all time.

These people have taken all of the passion they have for video games and pour it into developing a game that is deeply personal to them. This is their art; it's their way of expressing themselves. They put all of their time, energy, blood, sweat, talents, and tears into these games in hopes that people will connect to their game on a personal level, as well as enjoy playing them.

I love playing video games; I do it whenever I find the time. It's mostly the big ass epic games that I play though, like Halo and Modern Warfare. This movie opened my eyes to the power and intimacy of indie gaming, and from here on out, I'm going to be paying a lot more attention to it. This is a movement I should be following more closely, and gamers should be following it as well. There's something about these games that makes them matter more and makes them more fun to play. I grew up playing the classic Nintendo Entertainment System, and so did the people developing these games. They take everything they loved about playing those games as kids and created their own awesome classic style games that take gamers back to the things they loved growing up.

The way indie gaming is right now, is the same way indie filmmaking was in the early 90's when people realized they could actually go out and start make their own films without any corporate executives breathing down their necks and telling the talent what they need to do. Indie gaming is still in its infancy, and there's no doubt that things are going to start blowing up in the world of indie gaming in the near future.

Being the co-owner and writer of GeekTyrant, I was able to find a connection with these people. Like them, I've put a great deal of time, talents, and energy into my website. I'm doing everything I possibly can to work on making it better and growing it in hopes that one day I will be able make a solid living doing it. This is what these guys do with the games they make, and they do it because they love it. At the same time, they hope that all of the sacrifices they make to create their game pay off in the end. It's crazy watching the kind of insanity that these developers have to endure throughout the development process. There's so much weight on their shoulders, and it drives them to stress, anxiety, and depression. It was actually kind of hard to watch at times, because there were moments where I saw myself in many of the situations that they found themselves in. In a way, it was a reality check for me and my life, bringing to light on screen the changes, challenges, and sacrifices I've had to make to push my passion and way of expression forward. I actually found myself getting choked up several times throughout the course of the movie--that's how much it affected me. It was hard to watch, because I've changed so much over the last three years due to GeekTyrant, and this doc actually pointed that out to me. It made me aware of how I have changed, and it scared me a bit.

Indie Game: The Movie is a must watch film for anyone who loves the art of video games or is passionate about anything. This is a wonderfully fascinating documentary that any geek would enjoy watching, so I highly recommend watching it when it is released.

The film was written and directed by Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky

Here's the Synopsis:

With the twenty-first century comes a new breed of struggling independent artist: the indie game designer. Refusing to toil for major developers, these innovators independently conceive, design, and program their distinctly personal games in the hope that they, too, may find success.

After three years of painstaking work, designer Edmund McMillen and programmer Tommy Refenes await the release of their first major game for Xbox, Super Meat Boy—the adventures of a skinless boy in search of his girlfriend, who is made of bandages. At PAX, a major video-game expo, developer Phil Fish unveils his highly anticipated, four-years-in-the-making Fez. Jonathan Blow considers beginning a new game after creating Braid, one of the highest-rated games of all time.

First-time filmmaking duo Lisanne Pajot and James Swirsky capture the emotional journey of these meticulously obsessive artists who devote their lives to their interactive art. Four developers, three games, and one ultimate goal—to express oneself through a video game.

Diehard Zelda fans recreate entire Ocarina of Time in Minecraft

Diehard Zelda fans recreate entire Ocarina of Time in Minecraft

You've probably seen the 1:1 replica of the Star Trek Enterprise created in Minecraft. "Hyrulecraft" is more ambitious, because it's a 1:1 scale replica of the Nintendo 64 hit adventure game, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
