THE AVENGERS - VFX Supervisor Talks about the Film's Epic Awesomeness!

{}

Special effects supervisor on The Avengers movie Chris Wells recently gave a great interview to Star Burst Magazine[1] in which he talks about the film and its opening sequence, which is supposed to be insanely amazing. Here's what he had to say about this pre-intro to the movie, before the opening credits even roll...

We're doing what essentially boils down to the prelude of the movie. There's a whole intro that happens before you start even getting the titles and it's pretty big. There's nothing small in this movie. I went to a screening with all the temporary visual effects and it was pretty fleshed out. It's a long movie but it doesn't feel like it. Out of all the comic book movies and franchises I've worked on, this is the best one I've seen so far.

After seeing what I've seen of the film it's hard for me not to agree. The last Super Bowl trailer really gave us a feel for how big and epic The Avengers is going to be, and I hope it turns out to be the best comic book movie made to date. Wells was then asked if the movie will be more driven by action or the characters and story, here's his response...

I think they nailed both. Joss and I have worked on some projects before and he does a very good job with characters. Since this is the first time that we see these guys together as a unit, he had to address all their personal dealings with one another. I think he did a very good job of setting up the characters based on what we know from the Marvel franchise, integrating them together with all their differences and similarities and then getting on with business. And just when you think the movie is a character piece it just goes nuts.

Well, that's freaking awesome to know! I didn't think I could get any more excited about this movie, but reading this interview with Wells was pretty cool. He goes on to discuss the film a bit more, touching on the kind of Hulk we will be seeing, and a little bit more on how awesome the movie is...

I promise you it's not going to be boring. This thing has gone so big that Marvel are dwarfing their other franchises. For people who enjoy the comics and haven't really liked the way some of the characters were treated in other movies, I think they're going to be a little more appeased by this one. Especially the Hulk. They let the Hulk be Hulk and that's great. He acts more like the comic book Hulk. It's fun. My biggest problem with every single superhero movie is I don't think the payoff ever matches the build up. This one definitely does.

What more is there to say other than The Avengers isn't coming out soon enough!? I can't wait!

Jaden Smith in New Picture from M. Night Shyamalan's AFTER EARTH

{}

Thanks to our friends at JoBlo[1], we have a new picture from M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth. The picture gives us our first look at Jaden Smith, in what I am guessing is his costume. It is a bit hard to tell because the photo is in black and white. Will Smith and Zoe Kravitz also star in the film, which is currently shooting in Costa Rica.

After Earth centers on "real-life father-and-son Will and Jaden Smith as they crash land on an abandoned Earth a thousand years in the future.  Jaden's character must fight to survive and save both himself and his injured father."

I like what I see of the costume design and look forward to seeing more from the film. Check out some other photos from the set that we posted:

Updates on IRON MAN 3, CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 and DR. STRANGE

{}

Thanks to our friends over at Superherohype [1]we have an update on what Marvel has lined up for the big screen over the next few years. Just like Iron Man, Thor and Captain America laid the groundwork for The Avengers, that film is setting the stage for future films. According to Comicbook.com[2], Iron Man 3 is slated to begin filming in early May (likely after Robert Downey Jr. has completed press for Avengers) to meet a May 4,2013 release date.

Here is an excerpt from that report:

Multiple sources have told ComicBook.com that shooting for Iron Man 3 will begin prior to The Avengers hitting theaters May 4th, weeks ahead of previously published dates.  The film is scheduled to be shot in Wilmington, NC at the EUE/Screen Gems Studios and is believed to be the largest production ever to be filmed in North Carolina.

Previous reports have listed late May as the official production start date, but one source close to the North Carolina operations said that Marvel “will have staff in Wilmington as early as mid-March, with shooting scheduled to begin the last week of April or the first week of May.”

Asked to verify the report, Marvel Studios said they do not officially comment on current or future development but indicated the reports were likely accurate. An e-mail update from that same Marvel Studios source told ComicBook.com, “It is not April for sure.”

After Thor 2's releease on November 15, 2013, not much is known. Marvel has scheduled two untitled projects for release on April 4, 2014 and then on May 16, 2014. The date of 4/4/14 could possibly be the Fantastic Four reboot, but that is still a 20th Century Fox release. Instead, this date could be the Dr. Strange movie?

Here is what Fanshare[3] had to say on that project:

It has been confirmed that the script for Doctor Strange has been completed by Thomas Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer (Conan The Barbarian, Sahara) and Marvel Studios are now actively seeking a director to come in and helm the project. Once the director has come on board, they will then be searching for the cast to star in Doctor Strange.

The budget for Doctor Strange is not expected to be anywhere near as much as that of the bigger Marvel movies but it is still believed that, with the right script, the right director and the right cast, a good superhero movie could definitely come out of this. Production on Doctor Strange is expected to begin this year, with a release date likely to be sometime in 2013.

We have a very early synopsis for the Dr. Strange movie thanks to CBM[4] (via JoBlo[5]):

Doctor Strange centres around a New York surgeon, who stops running his practice after suffering injuries in a car crash. He then becomes a drifter and heads to the Himalayas, where he meets a healer and discovers that he has a great psychic power to fight against evil. Doctor Strange boasts powers that includes telepathy, teleportation, energy and astral projection.

The project that is likely to fill that date is none other than Captain America 2. Neal McDonough shared the following bit of info on IMDb[6]

"Yeah, they’re planning (to go into production for) Captain America 2 for the end of this year, because Marvel does one film at a time. So they’re going to do Thor 2 and as soon as Thor has wrapped, they’ll do Cap 2. Hopefully right after that, we’ll jump into Nick Fury because that’s the one I’m looking forward to more than anything."

Why is that?

"Because it’ll be me and Sam Jackson. In the real Marvel universe, Dum Dum Dugan is Nick Fury’s right hand man.

…And  I just pray that they have a 1970s setting, because I want to see Sam Jackson with lambchops kicking people’s asses for Marvel universe. It would just be awesome. And to work with Sam would be a treat. We’ve become friendly over the years."

At this time we have no official confirmation from Marvel, but the future is sure to be full of great superhero movies. Check out some cool new pieces of promo art from CBM[7] for The Avengers, which arrives in theaters on May 4.

GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Graphic Novel On the Way!

{}

In case you can not get enough of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, DC Comics' Vertigo label is bringing the story to life via graphic novel. Check out the cover above, thanks to our friends at Movies.com[1]. The novels won't arrive in stores until this coming November. The novels will be adapted by writer Denise Mina (Deception, Field of Blood) and artists Lee Bermejo (Batman: Noel, and the cover above), Leonardo Manco (Hellblazer), and Andrea Mutti (The Executor).

While this definitely looks cool, do you think that you might be a little worn out from seeing Dragon Tattoo stuff? I left David Fincher's adaptation wanting more of Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig in the lead roles, so this graphic novel is fine with me. What are your thoughts?
