Orlando Bloom To Star in ZULU

{}

Orlando Bloom has a special place in the hearts of geeks all over the world because of Lord of the Rings. Screen Daily[1] reports (via The Playlist[2]) that the actor is hoping to gain attention from critics with his next role. He has signed on to star in a new dramatic thriller called Zulu from French writer and filmmaker Jerome Salle. He directed Anthony Zimmer, which was recently remade for US audiences as The Tourist, and was responsible for Largo Winch and its sequel, The Burma Conspiracy

Julien Rappeneau is adapting Caryl Férey's novel, which tells the story of "two Cape Town police officers (Bloom, Honsou) who investigate the murder of a 18 year-old girl, the daughter of a member of the championship winning Springboks rugby team. The investigation reveals ties to the country's apartheid past in the simmering thriller." Djimon Honsou (Gladiator, Blood Diamond) has also signed on to star. Filming is slated to begin in July.

Bloom was made to play Legolas in LOTR, but I did not care for him in Pirates of the Caribbean. Zulu sounds like it could be one of Bloom's most dramatic roles to date. Do you like Bloom in LOTR or the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise?

Laurence Fishburne and Kevin Zegers May Star in Sci-Fi Thriller THE COLONY

{}

Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix, Mystic River, CSI) and Kevin Zegers (Dawn of the Dead, Frozen) are in final talks to star in The Colony. THR[1] reports that the actors are nearing a deal to star in the the indie sci-fi thriller about "a group of underground survivors after the next Ice Age fending off an invasion of feral cannibals."

Jeff Renfroe is directing based on a script he co-wrote with Patrick Tarr, Pascal Trottier, and Svet Rouskov. The rest of the cast list is being kept quiet for the $16 million Canadian indie. Filming is slated to begin in Toronto on February 22, and last until March 30. Zegers has handled zombies, so why not cannibals? I like Fishburne in sci fi films, so this should be a good fit for him. What are your thoughts?

GHOST RIDER 3 Possible?

{}

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance hasn't even come out yet, but the directing duo has already been talking to Sony about making a third Ghost Rider film.

In a recent interview with The Playlist[1] they confirmed that both they, along with Nicolas Cage, are "intrigued" by the possible opportunity to bring Ghost Rider back to life for a third time.

There's been talk about [a sequel]. I know Nic[olas Cage] wants to do it, he's very pumped about it. We'll just to see how well [this] does.

Because as with any sequel, the studio won't make one unless the movie before actually brings in money. I honestly don't think that will be a problem for this new movie. There's a lot of hype built up around it and it seems like people are pretty excited for it.

Surprisingly, I'm actually looking forward to seeing this movie. It just looks like a silly yet badass ride into Ghost Rider's hell. What do you think about the movie? Are you looking forward to seeing it?

How to create an indie movie with an algorithm

How to create an indie movie with an algorithm

An indie film group just exhibited a quirky piece at the Sundance Festival — a film created via a computer algorithm. Something of a "film clip roulette," the team shot unique scenarios, voice-overs and music clips that end up spliced together for a unique film that is different at each viewing.

Trailer and Poster For Drafthouse's COMIN' AT YA! 3D Restoration

{}

Drafthouse Films[1] restored the 80's indie Spaghetti Western Comin' At Ya! in 3D. The film is playing this month in Austin. It was directed by Ferdinando Baldi and stars Tony Anthony. Thanks to FirstShowing[2], we have a 2D version of the trailer and the poster.

This looks like it will be a fun time, and something that I would love to see in theaters at the Alamo Drafthouse! Watch the trailer below, and share your thoughts.

Here is a description of the film:

Armed with exclusively developed, cutting-edge 3D technology co-writer, producer & starTony Anthony enlisted Italian genre veteran Fernando Baldi to realize the first-ever 3D spaghetti western – a grindhouse-fueled tale of a vengeful gunslinger. Breaking indie box office records, Comin' at Ya! 3D is credited with igniting a resurgence of studio-produced 3D films. Thirty years later, Anthony and producer Tom Stern of Sternco 3D have broken new frontiers again with the first fully restored classic 3D film in high-def, utilizing contemporary state-of-art RealD technology. After premiering at Fantastic Fest, Drafthouse Films picked this up and will be re-releasing limited throughout Texas starting February 24th

Ryan Reynolds Says R.I.P.D. Is Set for a Sequel

{}

Ryan Reynolds says that R.I.P.D. is poised to get a sequel, according to The Playlist[1]. Filming wrapped over the weekend on the film directed by Robert Schwentke (REDS). Reynolds plays late police detective Nick Walker in the film based on Peter Lenkov's graphic novel. The actor had this to say while doing press for Safe House:

Being on set was incredible, because it's a movie project that I've been with for years and believed in. Being able to stick with it is half the battle.

Reynolds goes on to say:

I'm hoping to be able to work with all those people again. It could be a franchise. It certainly is set up, plot-wise, for a sequel. But nobody's signed on for that just yet. We would like it to be [a film series.]

Here is a description of the fantasy crime thriller:

Nick is dead -- at least, that's how he remembers it -- and teams up with another deceased detective, a gunslinger from the Old West (played by Jeff Bridges), to work for the elite task force, the Rest In Peace Department (hence the title), to track down the dead on Earth. (Due to overpopulation, some unsettled spirits haven't gone where they're supposed to, and are hiding out). Technically, R.I.P.D. officers (who are overseen by Mary-Louise Parker) aren't allowed to kill anyone living, and aren't supposed to interact with anyone from their previous lives, but Nick is haunted by the fact that he was murdered by another cop (played by Kevin Bacon), and can't let it go.

R.I.P.D. doesn't arrive in theaters until June 28, 2013. I am hopeful that it will be much better than Green Lantern. The combination of Bridges and Reynolds sounds great to me. What are your thoughts?

US Government Rules Mutants Not Human: Saves Marvel Millions

{}

While the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants may not be happy with the United States Court of International Trade's ruling, Fox News[1] reports Marvel is doing cartwheels! What reason does a court have on ruling on whether or not X-Men are human or inhuman? Money.

You see, if X-Men are considered human beings, that would classify their action figures under the "doll" category, meaning the tax rate for imports would come in at 12% as opposed to the usual 6.8% for most toys.

Luckily, quick thinking international trade lawyers (and potential enemies to every X-man in existence) Sherry Singer and Indie Singh were not only able to save Marvel money on the X-Men, but also got Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Hulk classified under mutant as well! The official court statement reads...

“Whatever the degree is to which they resemble human beings, the court finds that these action figures do not represent human beings …These fabulous characters use their extraordinary and unnatural physical and psychic powers on the side of either good or evil,”

Imagine the Jim Crow debacle this will cause if mutants ever become a part of everyday life...

Bradley Cooper Gives PARADISE LOST Update

{}

Bradley Cooper has some cool films coming out this year, with A Place Beyond the Pines opposite Ryan Gosling and The Silverlinings Playbook from David O. Russell. I was happy when he decided to drop out of the doomed (my opinion) reboot of The Crow so that he could play Lucifer in Alex Proyas' Paradise Lost. The film is an adaptation of John Milton's epic poem about war in heaven. That war almost did not get off the ground because of it's big budget.

During an interview with The Playlist[1] at Sundance, he gave an update. Cooper said that things are back on track, and stated, "We're going to hopefully start in June. Everything's going great. I mean, nothing's done until we're up and shooting."

The Hangover III will not get in the way of Paradise Lost. This will be great for Cooper, who is looking at a $15 million payday for the third comedic installment. Before Paradise Lost hit that bump in the road, it had Benjamin Walker, Casey Affleck, Djimon Housou, Diego Boneta, Camilla Belle, Sam Reid, Rufus Sewell, and Callan McAuliffe attached to star. Let's hope they are all still on board for it, and it makes it to theaters in 2014.

I am really looking forward to seeing the epic battle sequences in this film. What are your thoughts?
