Dutch Zombie Movie ZOMBIBI Trailer and Poster

{}

Thanks to our friends at BloodyDisgusting[1], we have the second teaser trailer and poster for Zombibi. Zombie movies are my favorite type of horror film. There is something cool about the sight of the walking dead chowing down on people. Zombie movies always have some cool heroic action sequences too, which I love.

Here is a translated synopsis:

Although his brother Mo klooiende by the pool enjoying the sun, will not mind the clumsy Aziz to be in the office. He is namely Tess, his beautiful colleague hole where he is madly in love on. However, when Aziz at the hands of his brother gets fired, he is so angry that he story is picked up at the pool. By accident he was arguing with the wrong and an hour later he and his brother with two blood linke Surinamese, Jeffrey and Nolan in a cell.

In retrospect, their salvation, for that night, a Russian space station crashed in the Netherlands. When they wake up after a noisy night, it appears no one in the police to be present on the young policewoman Kim after. If they come together behind the whole neighborhood is flooded with zombies, they still have only one goal. Here you get away as quickly as possible. But ... If Aziz overhear his voice he hears a cry for help from Tess. He must help her, but nobody wants to be lives for someone they do not even know...

The 3D movie arrives in Dutch cinemas sometime in 2012, but there is no word on a US release. I think Zombibi looks like a mix of humor and gore, and it should be a lot of fun. Weapons are important for your survival in a zombie movie. My two weapons of choice would be a bat and a sniper rifle. What weapons would you carry with you in the event of a zombie apocalypse?

Guillermo del Toro To Produce DAY OF THE DEAD Animated Movie

{}

The filmmaker behind Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth, and the upcoming monster epic Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro is attached to produce a new animated horror film with Reel FX called Day of the Dead. The movie will be CG animated, and Emmy Award winner Jorge R. Gutierrez (El Tigre, The Adventures of Manny Rivera) will be directing the movie which he is also co-writing with Doug Langdale

According to the press released "The film is an action-packed, fully CG-animated picture, with a 'Romeo and Juliet' style love story set against a Mexican 'Day of the Dead' backdrop. It represents the first time in almost twenty years -- since 1993's Cronos -- that del Toro has collaborated on a feature project set in Mexico. Music is also integral to the story; the film will feature an international roster of A-list recording artists performing new songs as well as re-imagined iconic songs."

Sounds like fun! For those of you who don't know, Del Toro recently worked on the CG animated film Puss in Boots for DreamWorks, and if you've seen it you can see his hand in helping develop the film. It turned out to be much better than I was expecting. He's also working on several other animated features. I'm excited to see that the filmmaker is going to add yet another project to his list of things to do. Reel FX’s Brad Booker is producing the film, and here's what he had to say in a statement:

We're thrilled to have Guillermo on board for 'Day of the Dead. As individuals, Guillermo and Jorge share a cultural background and love for Mexican folklore, which brings a palpable authenticity to our project; however, as artists, each brings to the picture a vastly different aesthetic sensibility. Working together for the first time, we feel that they bring a truly unique balance to the style and story of the film.

Del Toro added the following:

I have admired Jorge's work for a long time. He has a unique aesthetic and sense of humor. 'Day of the Dead' offers a perfect opportunity for his sensibilities to shine. This is a colorful, vibrant, vital fable that utilizes the animation medium in an incredible way. The object of the tale is not only to talk about life but to dazzle us - jolt us- into living to the fullest. To join Reel FX, Cary Granat and Jorge in this adventure is a privilege and a joy.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this project turns out. Is this a film project you would be interested in? Are you looking forward to seeing Del Toro dive farther into the animated feature film world?

THE EVIL DEAD Reboot - Updates by Jane Levy and Bruce Campbell

{}

Director Fede Alvarez is gearing up to start shooting the blood filled horror remake of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead. This time around it's going to be more heavy on the horror and light with the comedy. Suburgatory's Jane Levy was recently cast as the main character in the film, and she gave a little statement to The Insider[1] about how she feels about the movie saying,

I'm so excited, I'm a big fan of the original. To me it's the scariest movie, ever. But this one is really different. They've changed it a lot, but it's still a pretty gory movie. My mom probably can't see it. As for the tone, I think the humor in the first one came from the special effects of the time. I don't know that they meant it to be funny...this one is not funny. It's definitely dark.

Now, this is how Raimi originally envisioned his Evil Dead film, a dark gory horror film. That's the kind of film they set out to make in 1981, but it ended up being a great horror comedy because of the restraints they had. When this new Evil Dead movie was first being discussed Raimi said he wanted to do it so that he could show his original vision for the movie. The news outlet also talked to Bruce Campbell, who's a producer on the movie, and he says,

You can expect to have a damn scary horror movie. There's no Ash character -- The Evil Book is going to torment a new set of kids, so it's a remake, or a re-imagining or ... a re-whatever word you want to use. It's going to be re-scary.

He goes on to talk about the crazy evil trees from the original film. You know, the ones that tore up the character Cheryl. Well, Campbell laughingly says that they will be back, and that "they're not terribly well-behaved this time either."

I know that this is a reboot of a beloved horror franchise, but I'm actually really excited about seeing what they do with it. As long as it's guided by the vision of Raimi and Campbel,l I don't have a problem with it.

The story follows five friends (David, Natalie, Eric, Olivia, and Mia) who hole up at a remote cabin where they discover a Book of the Dead. A demonic force is unleashed, possessing each until only one is left to fight for survival. Other information on the film reveals that the lead character takes his younger sister to the family's cabin to help her kick her drug addiction. Without her drugs she becomes insane and difficult to control, which makes it impossible to see that she's actually possessed.

According to a previous report, David is a mechanic and is engaged to Natalie. Mia is the sister heading to the cabin to detox; Olivia is her best friend/nurse. Eric, presumably, is the kid who unleashes the demons.

Have you ever had anything crazy or strange happen to you while camping or sting in a cabin in the woods? I guess what I should be asking is if you've ever been camping, because you never know with us internet technology geeks.

Did HUNGER GAMES Rip-Off BATTLE ROYALE?

{}

Doubtless this has been discussed amongst your geek herd already, but if you haven't heard, claims are being made that Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins lifted a bunch of plot from a Japanese novel called Battle Royale by Koushun Takami.

Without spoiling anything from either side, you can know that both stories involve youths fighting for survival against a government who wishes to punish them.

That being said...watching both trailers will clue you in on some of the differences pretty quickly.

So Battle Royale was released 9 years before The Hunger Games. Can the BR fans really say the idea of youths killing or the thought of an oppressive government broadcasting tyrannical horrors is a new concept?

Even if you don't include real historical events like Gladiator battles in Rome, public executions in soccer stadiums in the Middle East, or works like The Most Dangerous Game or Theseus and The Minotaur, we still live in a world where watching movies like A Clockwork Orange and an episode of The Jersey Shore will undoubtedly give someone the idea "HEY I SHOULD MESH THOSE TOGETHER!" Before you know it, you have milk drinking Italian-Americans fist pumping to classical music in the midst of a dark and twisted "situation."

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that it doesn't matter truly if THG stole content from BR because their stories are unique enough and the concept has been done literally and literature-ly since ancient times. If you like Quentin Tarrantino's opinion and excessive amounts of gore go see Battle Royale, and if you have a hankering for better production quality and presentation wait for The Hunger Games.

Oh...and before you flood the comments, I found absolutely no evidence that Battle Royale was ever banned in the United States, hence my not mentioning it.

Joss Whedon's THE CABIN IN THE WOODS Is "A Very Loving Hate Letter"

{}

Joss Whedon's upcoming horror film The Cabin in the Woods is finally coming out after years of waiting. The film comes out on April 13th and the synopsis for the film is, "Five friends go to a remote cabin in the woods. Bad things happen... If you think you know this story, think again." After seeing the trailer for the film it turned out to be something I wasn't expecting, but it looked like it was going to be extremely entertaining.

In a interview with Total Film[1] Whedon discusses his inspiration for the the film, calling it "a very loving hate letter", here's what he had to say...

It’s basically a very loving hate letter. On some level it was completely a lark, me and Drew [Goddard, director] trying to figure out what the most fun we could have would be. On another level it’s a serious critique of what we love and what we don’t about horror movies.

I love being scared. I love that mixture of thrill, of horror, that objectification/identification thing of wanting definitely for the people to be alright but at the same time hoping they’ll go somewhere dark and face something awful.

The things that I don’t like are kids acting like idiots, the devolution of the horror movie into torture porn and into a long series of sadistic comeuppances. Drew and I both felt that the pendulum had sung a little too far in that direction.

I agree with everything Whedon says here... it's exactly how I feel about horror movies! This is one of the main reasons I know Cabin in the Woods is going to be a movie I enjoy watching. It was made by movie geeks that share the same opinions on the horror genre as a lot of us. I'm excited about seeing this one. In case you missed the trailer, you can watch it below! What do you think about what Whedon had to say in this interview?

New Trailer for Clive Owen's INTRUDERS

{}

A new trailer has been released for the Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) directed horror thriller Intruders, which stars Clive Owen. The story follows two children that live in different countries, and each is visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them. It's never a good thing when kids faces are erased from their heads.

If you like horror films, then this is mostly likely something that you'll want to see. Hell, I like horror films so I'll be seeing it. I think it looks like it could be a fun movie.

Here's the Synopsis:

Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow's beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out.

The film hits theaters on March 30th, 2012. Watch the trailer below, and let us know if this looks like it will be a good horror film.

DRACULA YEAR ZERO to be Directed by Gary Shore

{}

Universal Pictures is once again looking to get their supernatural horror film Dracula Year Zero into development. The movie was first announced back in 2008 when director Alex Proyas (The Crow) was attached to direct it. Proyas ended up leaving the project due to budget issues and went to focus on his adaptation of Paradise Lost, which was recently cancelled, also because of budget issues. At the time, Sam Worthington was also attached to star in the film as Dracula. Proyas is obviously having a rough time getting a movie off the ground these days.

Today Deadline reports that the studio is in negotiations with commercial director Gary Shore to direct the movie. It looks like this would be shores first feature film, who previously directed a short called The Draft. But! Most of you might be familiar with shores artistically done short called Wolverine Vs. The Hand, which you can watch below.

I'd be interested to see what what Shore would do with a feature film, I think the guy has some talent. If he ends up taking the film we'll get to see what exactly he can do. Check out the video below then read some details on the Dracula film...

Worthington is no longer attached the project, but here's a few little comments Proyas made while working on it. He said the script by Matt Sazama andBurk Sharpless will,

put the whole legend on its head in every conceivable way and comes out with something that is both a kind of an ode to Bram Stoker’s original Dracula, in that it’s kind of a prequel to that, but it also redefines the character to such an extent that I found it quite exciting, so that is very much a kind of reinvention of that character and it’s why I got excited about it.

He goes on to talk about the story a bit saying,

It's Prince Vlad of Transylvania in the 14th century, and to save his kingdom and his family he takes his first step into darkness, It's his evolution into the monster that Dracula became.

He concluded by saying that the movie is going to be a more realistic take on the story.

What do you think about the possibility of Shore taking on this new Dracula film?

ROOM 237 - The Shining Kubrick Doc Picked Up by IFC

{}

Room 237 was one of my favorite films at The Sundance Film Festival. Room 237 is a documentary that explores several crazy theories surrounding Stanley Kubrick's 1980 classic horror film The Shining. These hidden meanings are explored in nine segments, and it features voice overs from several different Shining fanatics while using footage from Kubrick's movie to show examples of their conclusions. You can read our wonderful review of the film right here[1]

This truly is a fascinating documentary, one that needs to be seen by everyone that is a fan of Kubrick's horror masterpiece. I'm happy to say that the doc has been acquired by IFC Films, so you'll get your chance soon enough to watch it. According to Deadline, the distribution company will release the film later this year simultaneously in theaters and Video On Demand.

I loved the doc, and regardless of what I believed and didn't believe in this movie, in the end it still blew my mind. I'll never watch The Shining the same way again.

Movie Trailer for Steve Carell's SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD

{}

The end of the world is coming in three weeks, and everything you've come to know and love will be obliterated... what do you do with the time you are given? This question is explored in a new romantic comedy from Focus Features called Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World. The story follows Steve Carell and Keira Knightley as they go out looking for love and family before the end of the world. It was written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, the woman behind the script for Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, which I thought was a great film.

The film also stars Adam Brody (The OC), Connie Britton (American Horror Story),  Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Derek Luke (Antoine Fisher), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), T.J. Miller (Cloverfield), and Patton Oswalt (Big Fan).

Here's the Synopsis:

Set in a too-near future, a man searches for a meaningful connection as humanity’s last days are at hand. Can he find his greatest love at the worst possible time? As the respective journeys of Dodge and Penny converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks – if not the world’s – brighten.

The movie is set to hit theaters on June 22nd, 2012. Check out the trailer below, and tell us what you think!

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Joins THE DARKNESS

{}

Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The Thing, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter) will star in a psychological thriller titled The Darkness. German filmmaker Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism) will helm the film written by Megan Holley (Sunshine Cleaning). It is scheduled to begin shooting this summer in Europe.

The film centers around

[Winstead] as an American student looking after her tutor's two children in a remote English manor house. She soon comes to believe that she and the children are being haunted when their lives are threatened by mysterious events.

With a career comprised largely of horror films, Winstead is a natural fit in this new film. What do you think? Will you go see the film or shun The Darkness?
