Starved for details on the new Splinter Cell following the impressive showings at E3 and TGS? Well, the new issue of Official Xbox Magazine features a cover story on Splinter Cell: Conviction, blowing the lid off the game’s new co-operative multiplayer modes.
According to their writeup, co-op play in Conviction stars a Russian (named Kestrel) and an American (Archer) that players will control through a four-level prologue campaign. This mode is expected to last roughly six hours, and will include many of the new gameplay features that have been shown off in Conviction’s single-player mode — “marking and executing” targets, the “last known position” stealth mechanic, and interrogations all make the cut.
There’s also talk of co-op-specific maneuvers. If an enemy grabs one of the players from behind, for instance, that player will be able to elbow his captor to give his partner a clearer shot. The cover story goes on to describe a scenario where both agents have to place explosive charges to bypass an obstacle. And when things start to get hairy, players will even have the opportunity to resuscitate each other whenever one of them goes down, with the wounded agent having the choice of either playing dead or providing covering fire from the ground until he’s back in action.
