Red Skull Will Be ‘Rather Frightening’ In ‘Captain America’ Movie, Says Kevin Feige

Published on: 7th September, 2010

Earlier this year, Hugo Weaving signed on to portray the villainous Red Skull opposite Chris Evans in ” The First Avenger: Captain America .” And while the casting of Weaving has generally been met with fan approval — thanks in part to his memorable turn as Agent Smith in “The Matrix” trilogy — there haven’t been any full sightings yet of Weaving in costume aside from a tease at the San Diego Comic-Con. However, according to Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, the reveal will be worth the wait. “Hugo Weaving has been in the Red Skull effect, in costume for a couple of weeks now and it’s a hell of a lot of fun,” Feige told Total Film . “We gave people a little taste in San Diego about what his character will look like but now that we’ve started to work with the actual skull it’s going to be a lot of fun and a rather frightening villain.” Regarding Marvel’s previously announced decision to film “Captain America” at Pinewood Studios in England, Feige defended the choice and spoke about the history of that location. “Two thirds of the film actually takes place in Europe and there are many scenes in and around London,” explained Feige. “So it just made sense that we film it where the majority of the film takes place. Having been here now for almost two and a half months prepping and twenty-some days into shooting. The history here is pretty impressive. I was at Pinewood yesterday and you walk past pictures of the set of Tim Burton’s original ‘Batman’ and all the amazing work that Donner did on ‘Superman.’ “Everytime we’re on a new stage in Shepperton somebody tells me this is where the war room was for ‘Dr. Strangelove,’” continued Feige. “Or this is where they shot some of ’2001.’ There’s such an amazing genre film history here and the technicians and the crews and the sets are just some of the best we’ve ever had. It’s been a pleasure.” Feige also offered a brief update on ” The Avengers .” “There’s not much I can tell you but Joss [Whedon] is hard at work with the script and we’ve hired most of our crew,” related Feige. “They’re looking to design and build and prepare for when we start filming next year.” “The First Avenger: Captain America” storms into theaters on July 22, 2011 with “The Avengers” to follow on May 04, 2012. Playing Spider-Man Is A Dream Come True, Says Andrew Garfield

Published on: 7th September, 2010

Back in July, Andrew Garfield emerged victorious over a number of up-and-coming actors to win the coveted title role in director Marc Webb’s “Spider-Man” reboot . And while David Fincher — who directed Garfield in “The Social Network” — told MTV News back at Comic-Con that he couldn’t imagine Garfield being comfortable as Peter Parker , Garfield himself strongly disagrees. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter if he has been preparing for the role, Garfield replied “I have been waiting for this phone call for 24 years, for someone to call me up and say, ‘Hey, we want you to pretend to be a character that you’ve always wanted to be all your life, and we’re going to do it with cool cameras and cool effects and you’re going to feel like you’re swinging through New York City. Do you want to do that?’” “‘Let me just consult with my seven-year old self and see what he thinks,’” laughed Garfield. “So my seven-year-old self started screaming in my soul and saying, ‘This is what we’ve been waiting for.’ Like every young boy who feels stronger on the inside than they look on the outside, any skinny boy basically who wishes their muscles matched their sense of injustice.” “God, it’s just the stuff that dreams are made of, for sure,” added Garfield. “It’s a true f—ing honor to be part of this symbol that I actually think is a very important symbol and it’s meant a great deal to me, and it continues to mean something to people. So yeah, I feel like I’ve been preparing for it for a while. Ever since Halloween when I was four years old and I wore my first Spider-Man costume.” Garfield also stated that he deals with the role’s increased visibility. “Not to give it credence, not to give it any of my energy,” said Garfield. “Just approach it like any other job that I care about deeply. That may be naive of me to think that I can just get away with that. But if you give focus to something, it will grow. I just want to be an actor, really. And of course all those things came into consideration when I was making the decision. But at the end of the day, I had faith that I would be able to not be defined by it. And I still have faith that I will be able to get lost in roles and just keep doing what I love to do.” The story also mentions that “Spider-Man” will begin filming in December, despite the fact that Spider-Man’s leading lady has still not yet been found . “Spider-Man” will swing into theaters in 3-D on July 03, 2012. What are your impressions of Garfield’s enthusiasm for the role? Will he be able to surpass Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker? Who should be cast as his love interest? LET ME IN Film Clip

Published on: 2nd September, 2010

Here’s a new creepy film clip from Matt Reeves directed film Let Me In , the remake of Let the Right One In . This is a short version of a clip that they showed us at Comic-Con this year. The film is an adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist novel and stars Kodi Smit-McPhee, Chloe Moretz, Richard Jenkins, Elias Koteas, Cara Buono and Sasha Barrese. The film tells a terrifying tale about an alienated 12-year old boy named Owen (Smit-McPhee) who is viciously bullied by his classmates and neglected by his divorcing parents. Achingly lonely, Owen spends his days plotting revenge on his middle school tormentors and his evenings spying on the other inhabitants of his apartment complex. His only friend is his new neighbor Abby (Moretz), an eerily self-possessed young girl who lives next door with her silent father (Jenkins). A frail, troubled child about Owen’s age, Abby emerges from her heavily curtained apartment only at night and always barefoot, seemingly immune to the bitter winter elements. Recognizing a fellow outcast, Owen opens up to her and before long, the two have formed a unique bond. The movie is set to be released on October 1st. I had no real desire to see this movie when I first heard it was getting remade, but the stuff I’ve seen from it has sparked my interest. It looks like it could be good, no matter how bad some of us wish it wouldn’t be because we loved the original so much. Check out the clip below and let us know what you think!

Comic Book Piracy, Jim Lee In Egypt, And Paris Hilton In Today’s Twitter Report

Published on: 1st September, 2010

Mark Waid ruffled a few feathers with his Harvey Awards keynote speech at Baltimore Comic-Con, and he kicked off a round of Twitter discussions that included an exchange with Erik Larsen and follow-ups from a few vocal anti-piracy creators. He says he’s posting the entire text of his speech online soon, but you’d do well to click through to his and Larsen’s feeds to get a wider perspective. On the other side of the globe, Jim Lee has been posting pictures from his adventures in Egypt, and loves his photo filters. Check out where he’s going next, what John Layman thinks about Paris Hilton and how Cameron Stewart learned to use a new Gmail feature to find his phone. I’m @brianwarmoth , and this stuff’s all on the record in the Twitter Report for September 1, 2010. That’s all. Back to work. -Christos Gage, Writer (“Union Jack,” “Absolution”) Piracy pt. 5: @ronmarz I know of one publisher who tracked illegal downloads for a specific title, found them to be 4X (per issue) the actual sales of the issues. -Ron Marz, Writer (“Green Lantern,” “Witchblade”) @THEHITCHFACTORY Drawing a cover for Wolverine: The Best There Is issue 2 today then FINALLY starting the @brianmbendis project after too many false tries! -Bryan Hitch, Artist (“The Ultimates,” “Captain America: Reborn”) @jimlee00 All for now. ‘Fantastic Four’ Casting, ‘Firebreather’ News, And ‘Doctor Who’ Complaints In Today’s Twitter Report

Published on: 31st August, 2010

Whether or not “True Blood” actor Stephen Moyer is in the running for Doctor Doom in a Fantastic Four movie reboot , Gail Simone has strong feelings about how Sue Storm should be cast, and she tweeted her hopes regarding the part (and Jessica Alba ) yesterday. Meanwhile, a “Firebreather” peek sneaked out at San Diego this summer, but further news may be on the way, judging from a Phil Hester post Monday. Make your own assessments after the jump, where you’ll find out who in the comic book industry is unimpressed by ” Doctor Who ,” what writing a TV pitch feels like for Warren Ellis , and what it looks like when artist Ming Doyle sketches Emma Frost. I’m @brianwarmoth , and this is your Twitter Report for August 31, 2010. @philhester Just got exciting Firebreather news. I haven’t even shared it with @andykuhn yet. Mark Ruffalo Would’ve Rejected Hulk Role In The Past, Explains Why He Took It Now

Published on: 30th August, 2010

By Rachel Molino If Mark Ruffalo had been offered the role of Bruce Banner in Marvel’s original “Hulk” movie, it’s likely he would have passed on it. As it turned out, the cerebral, medium-twisting Ang Lee-directed “Hulk” did little to help or harm the career of its star, Eric Bana. Yet, as the comic movie craze gained momentum, Marvel’s relatively young movie faction has sought to get the character perfectly primed for its team epic “ The Avengers ”. Named during Comic-Con as the newest actor to play the green goliath, Ruffalo told Australia’s Sunday Herald-Sun (via What’s Playing ) that it was Robert Downey Jr. who granted him a fresh perspective on the potential of comic book hero movies. “Because of what Robert [Downey Jr.] had done and where that genre has gone since then, I did it,” he said. Still, the actor, a fan of “The Incredible Hulk” TV show, remains wary of his artificial costars: the obligatory green screen and collection of special effects he’ll be working with in “The Avengers”. Writer/Director Joss Whedon, for one, has placed a vote of extreme confidence in Ruffalo’s ability to remedy ailing film property. While Ruffalo may have fond memories of Hulk, he still sees the comic franchise fallout for the blockbuster it is, and it’s inclusion in his repertoire of credentials is something he approaches mathematically. “Five for me and one for them,” said Ruffalo, referring to his practice of choosing personal, independent projects over big studio money makers. “I have never really been one to go for the cash. If my dad knew how much money I had turned in my lifetime he would kick me in the ass”. Will Mark Ruffalo fix The Hulk once and for all? Can you believe Marvel is rebooting the character’s film counterpart for the third time in six years? Let us know what you think in the comment section or on Twitter !

TWITTER REPORT: Glenn Beck, North Korea, And The Harvey Awards

Published on: 27th August, 2010

Scott Kurtz has been preparing his lines for the Harvey Awards ceremony Saturday in conjunction with Baltimore Comic-Con. He’s setting a high bar for himself, too, since he predicts that he’ll be booed off the stage for at least one joke. Glenn Beck will also be attracting attention on Saturday in nearby Washington, D.C., and while Laurenn McCubbin didn’t weigh in on the event’s messaging via Twitter, she did take issue with Beck’s poster designer. Elsewhere in the feed, Simon Spurrier made a bold prediction about the lady caught throwing a cat away on camera, Jeff Katz issued a warning about Spider-Man pimp chalices, and Andy Diggle found some closure over a problem he had with “Inception.” Find out if you shared his grievance below, as well as if you agree with Rick Remender ‘s failsafe plan for meeting American Presidents. I’m @brianwarmoth , and this is the Twitter Report for August 27, 2010. @laurennmcc Wow – the dude who designed Glenn Beck’s poster basically makes a living by ripping off a more famous designer. -Laurenn McCubbin, Artist (“Quit City,” “Sable and Fortune”) @Remender The lesson: If you want to meet a President, become a prisoner of North Korea. -Rick Remender, Writer (“Fear Agent,” “Punisher”) @cameronMstewart Writing the dialogue script for Assassin’s Creed. It’s a strange feeling, with Sin Titulo and AC, to now legitimately be a comics writer. -Cameron Stewart, Writer/Artist (“Batman and Robin,” “Sin Titulo”) @pvponline Holy sh–. I just wrote a joke for the Harvey’s that’s probably going to get me booed off stage. Looking forward to saying it. -Scott Kurtz, Writer/Artist (“PvP”) @andydiggle That INCEPTION plot hole I thought I’d spotted? Nolan totally had it covered in the script: “Cobb pulls Eames out of Fischer’s earshot.” -Andy Diggle, Writer (“The Losers,” “Hellblazer”) @KatzMoney Note to self: Don’t drink vodka out of a Spider-Man pimp chalice. It is deceptively large. -Jeff Katz, Writer/Producer (“Booster Gold,” “Freddy vs Jason vs Ash”) Parting Wisdom for the Day: @sispurrier You’ll all feel stupid when Cat-Bin-Lady publishes her revolutionary paper updating Schrodinger’s quantum theories. #catbinlady -Simon Spurrier, Writer (“Gutsville,” “Wolverine: Dangerous Game”) Be sure to follow @MTVSplashPage on Twitter for up-to-the-minute breaking news in the world of comics and movies.

Cam Gigandet Calls His ‘Priest’ Weaponry ‘Brutal’

Published on: 27th August, 2010

Late last year, “http://splashpage.mtv.com/tag/priest” actor Cam Gigandet regaled us with tales of the “unbelievable” weapons his character wields in the upcoming live-action adaptation of Min-Woo Hyung’s popular manhwa series . When MTV News sat down with Gigandet and his “Priest” co-stars Maggie Q and Karl Urban , the “Twilight” alum turned the conversation back to the gun his character uses in a quest to rescue his girlfriend from renegade vampires. “They designed and built it, and it was literally, ten pounds,” Gigandet told MTV News. “If we’re doing a scene and I have to have my hand up with the gun, by the end of the scene it’s right here, shaking,” he said, lowering his arm. “It was brutal.” Previously, “Priest” director Scott Stewart and actor Paul Bettany , who plays the film’s title character, explained why the film won’t be your average vampire tale. Along with comparing the powers of Bettany’s character to a Jedi Knight, Stewart said the story of powerful warriors rendered obsolete after a war with vampires is “a really different kind of story.” Attendees at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego got their first taste of “Priest,” which is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2011 .
